Welcome to the Neighborhood: Washington Commons

Friday night was a major event in Prospect Heights: the opening of a new bar.  I know what you’re thinking: “Oh great, just what Brooklyn needs, another bar.”  But this bar is special for a couple reasons.

1. It’s owned by the same people who own the 4th Ave. Pub, famous for its 28 beers on tap and relaxed attitude.

2. It’s located on my block.  This is life-changing.

It’s called Washington Commons (southwest corner of Washington Ave. and Park Place).  Other than a little black paint, the outside hasn’t changed much since I first moved in (the name of the bar is currently written on a chalkboard leaned up against the inside window), but the inside is gorgeous.  A giant U-shaped bar, several tables, and a large outdoor area give it exactly the kind of atmosphere you want in your neighborhood bar.

And apparently, the neighborhood really wanted a bar.  The opening night was packed, especially considering the fact that they had no press.  They had about 16 taps, and the bartender told me that at some point down the line they plan to have a kitchen and serve appetizers, though he assured me it wouldn’t be anything high minded, just good ol’ bar food.  Prices are equivalent to the 4th Ave. Pub, between $5 and $8 depending on the beer.  We’re thrilled to have a place to hang out that’s a little further into the Heights than Vanderbilt Ave.  My only request is that none of you go there so that it can be my own personal neighborhood haunt.  Here’s to you, Washington Commons!  Welcome to the block.

I’m afraid I cannot honor your request, but I think you can still call it your neighborhood haunt. Three cheers for good bars in Brooklyn!
