Goods coming to Underhill in December
Brownstoner just posted this: a new grocery store/restaurant/coffee shop will be opening at 115 Underhill in December (that’s Underhill and Prospect, close to the garage). Their facebook page is looking for suggestions of what specialty foods to carry, so go give them some suggestions!

Welcome to the Neighborhood: The Vanderbilt
Friday night was the grand opening of The Vanderbilt, the new restaurant on the northwest corner of Bergen and Vanderbilt. I have to say, in my time in the neighborhood I have NEVER seen such a hyped opening! We arrived at 7:30 and were told the wait for two was an hour and fifteen minutes; [...]

Restaurant Week: The Modern Bar Room
Those of us who live in Brooklyn know there are enough fabulous restaurants in this borough to eat out every night of the year. So why bother going to an expensive restaurant in Manhattan? Because it’s NYC Restaurant Week and there are deals to be had! For those who aren’t familiar with Restaurant Week, it’s [...]

Garden at Ortine
As we mentioned previously, Ortine recently opened up their back garden. We had a late brunch there Sunday and the garden is lovely! Bright blue tables under a bright blue umbrella, surrounded by a white fence. What makes Ortine’s garden special is that they actually use what grows there; their drink special was sangria made [...]

Neighborhood Joints: The Chocolate Room
The Chocolate Room is one of the first places I ate in Brooklyn, when my gentleman friend and I helped his brother unpack from moving to the area. It’s just what it sounds like: a restaurant devoted to chocolate. The atmosphere is classy but not pretentous, and the food is amazing. I usually get the [...]

Updates: Ortine garden now open!
From Gothamist: “What’s new is that Ortine has just opened a garden dining area that’s actually a real garden. Freshly-planted herbs and an in-ground vegetable garden will soon be supplying ingredients for the kitchen. (All pickling, preserving, sprouting and baking is done in-house.) A fruit-bearing cherry tree, a spruce tree, and a rose bush complete [...]

Neighborhood Joints: Chavella’s
Chavella’s opened down the street from my old apartment not long after I moved in there two years ago. It’s tiny Mexican restaurant with maybe 10 tables, and from the first time we visited, we knew we had something good on our hands. Little did we know what an incredible restaurant Chavella’s would become. Now [...]

Notes from a Waitress
As I’ve mentioned before, my money job is waiting tables. I’ve been at the same restaurant for two years, and even though it’s not my “career,” I work very hard at it. After two years on this side of the service industry, there are a few things I wish I could tell the world at [...]

Expert Opinion: Wine Class with Franny of Franny’s
I started learning about wine when I began a job in the restaurant industry two years ago, and I am by no means an expert, but for a twenty-something Brooklynite I think I have a decent working knowledge of wines and how to pair them. That is, as long as they’re French wines or Califormia [...]

Neighborhood Joints: Ortine
One of our favorite new-ish places in Prospect Heights is Ortine, which has been open since December 2008. It’s exactly the kind of place we’re always hoping will open in the neighborhood: a coffee shop/cafe with wine and beer. The menu is limited in size but not in vision; my gentleman friend recently enjoyed the [...]
